Where are the Turks and Caicos Islands
We just got back from Turks and Caicos and it was ahh-mazing. What? Where is that? Is that in Mexico? No, it is not in Mexico. Where are the Turks and Caicos islands? The Turks and Caicos Islands are 550 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. They are below the Bahamas and are East of Cuba and northeast of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The Turks and Caicos are located in the Atlantic Ocean.
Never Heard of Them?
We often have this conversation with our friends, family, and acquaintances. It seems so crazy to us that so few people had have ever heard of these wonderful little islands in the sea. I can admit that I had never heard of them either until a couple of years back. We have traveled to several different spots in the Caribbean and were looking for somewhere new to go. We ran across this place. The rest is history.
Once we explain where the islands are, everyone wants to know how expensive it is to go there. Our answer is always, affordable. Of course, everyone’s affordable may mean different things. When we first decided to go there and started research, we thought this may not be in our budget.
At first glance of Turks and Caicos, we thought this was the prettiest place we had ever seen. We felt sure the images on the internet were photo-shopped. The most famous beach in Turks and Caicos is Grace Bay Beach. It is stunning. When you research Turks and Caicos, Grace Bay Beach is generally what you see.
We were sure it was out of our reach and out of our budget to stay on such a magical beach. It appeared to us that only the rich and famous could visit these wonderful little islands. Our biggest concern was the price of the hotels. On first glance, it seems as though the hotels on the island all cater to higher end budgets. After many hours of research, I discovered that most budgets can afford to visit. Our budget included. This excited us and our research continued.
We spent many hours researching hotels, condos, restaurants, activities, and everything between. You must know where to look to find the affordable places to stay. (We’ll be providing more on this in upcoming posts so stay tuned! Sign up for our newsletter and we’ll let you know when we post something new.) Not all condos and hotels are high end. There are plenty to choose from for average budgets like mine. You will find there are many hotels from mid to low end to completely luxurious and over the top.
Restaurant prices range from $10 per meal to $50 per meal. Some prices are a little more, some are less. Great pizzas and casual dining is within arm’s reach. A top notch steak or seafood meal is also easy to find. The food prices depend on which restaurant you visit and what you are looking to eat. On the island you will also find several grocery stores to shop at. If you are looking to save on food, cooking is an option.
What to Do?
There are plenty of activities on the island as well. They are priced according to most other tourist destinations. Depending on what the activity is, you can expect an average of $100 per person. Of course, the best activity of all is free. Lying on the beach is one of the best activities and yes I said it. Free. Most hotels in Grace Bay allow the free use of paddle boards, kayaks, and snorkel equipment. You will find many other activities including horseback riding on the beach, paddle board tours, boat charters, and much more.
Grace Bay is in walking distance to many activities and great restaurants. Getting around the island has never been a problem for us. We do not mind walking. If we are able to walk, we walk. Other modes of transportation include taxis and car rentals. Car rentals are affordable and taxis are always available. Taxis are pricey, depending on where you are going on the island.
We are certainly happy we chose to go to Turks and Caicos. Choosing to go to Providenciales, Turks and Caicos is one of the best decisions we have ever made. The island, the restaurants, the activities, and the beaches exceeded our expectations. We fell in love with the beaches of Grace Bay and the people. The people that live there are always nice and it is fun talking to the people we meet in our travels.
