The Sands at Grace Bay
My husband and I like to try different resorts in Turks and Caicos. In November 2017, we stayed at The Sands at Grace Bay. We loved The Sands. The property was very well kept and manicured. Having gone in November, we were there shortly after Hurricane Irma and shortly after the resorts opened back up. The entire time we were there the grounds keepers were working diligently to get everything back in order. Considering they just had a major hurricane, everything looked great. Yes, the palm trees were a little skimpy…things like that…but overall very nice.
In addition to nice grounds, the staff were always friendly and helpful. We have stayed in some other resorts on the island where the staff wasn’t great, so having nice staff was great.
Checking in and checking out was a breeze. The entrance and the area where you check in is very pretty and clean and has a very caribbean feel.
The Rooms at The Sands
We stayed in a studio oceanview room. When I booked, I booked a standard studio garden room, but our balcony actually had a side angle type view of the ocean. I am not super picky when it comes to booking rooms in Turks and Caicos. When I say that, I mean…like…I do not HAVE to have an ocean front or even ocean view room. We are very rarely in our rooms so I just never see the point in spending that extra money.
Anyway, back to the room. So, the studio room at The Sands is the biggest studio room we have ever stayed in. When walking into our back door, we walked right into our bedroom area. Then, from the bedroom area we walked down a hallway, which is where the bathroom is located. At the end of the hallway was a sitting area with a small sitting/living area that included a pullout couch, chair, TV, and our kitchenette. From this area were doors that led to our balcony that had a partial ocean view.
Again, we are not in our rooms except to sleep, so we pretty much used the extra living space to unpack our clothing and store our things while there.
Ocean Front Deluxe Rooms at The Sands
Okay, so one day while walking back up to our room we noticed the ocean front deluxe room. The lady’s were cleaning the room, so we stuck our heads in and asked if we could look around. Let me just say OMG – this room is awesome. The pictures of this room just do not do it justice. As soon as you walk into the back door, you are immediately hit in the face with panoramic ocean views. The living room and kitchen space is huge. There was a bathroom off of the living space. The master area was huge as was the master bathroom. A nice inside space is great and all, but the part that really got me was the balcony. It is HUGE and screened in. We jokingly said that we would just sleep outside if we stayed in that room.
The exact room we went in was room number 3206. I’m telling you, it was awesome. My mother and some friends are going to Turks and Caicos in May and because they may or may not ever go again, I am booking them in a super cool room like this at The Sands.
The Sands at Grace Bay has beautiful grounds and beautiful pools and one hot tub. Unfortunately, on our trip, we spent more time that we would have liked in the hot tub because of rain. We were told November is typically a great time to visit but that since Irma the weather had been pretty unpredictable. The sun hid from us the majority of the week and it rained frequently. As you can tell, my pictures turned out to be somewhat misty and not so great, but that is pretty much what we saw while there. Of course, we still had fun. But, I’m not going to lie I would have rather had the sun and no rain…who wouldn’t!?!
The Sands does offer a pool and beach cocktail service which is nice. We didn’t use it much as my husband would just go to Hemingway’s and get a drink when he wanted it. The drinks are pricey as are most on the island. The Pelican at the Royal West Indies has the best happy hour – hint, hint. At the resort, there is an activity type room with TVs and couches. There are also bathrooms and showers in this space as well as an ice machine which we used daily to fill our cooler.
In this building is where you can also get massages by Spa Tropique. I got a massage while there and it was amazing. The lady’s at Spa Tropique are ALWAYS amazing and super nice. I can honestly say (and my husband agrees) that they give the BEST massages we have ever had. I would like get one every day while on vacation if it made sense – ha.
Also on site is a small convenience store. The store is good for those who do not have a car rental. Otherwise, most can just hop in their car and go to Graceway Gourmet.
Hemingway’s Restaurant and Bar
We have always heard very mixed reviews about Hemingway’s at The Sands. Since we were staying at The Sands, we decided to give it a try. If being honest, which I always try to be….we did not care for the food there. We ate lunch there one day and got a burger and fries. We ordered only one plate and split it and could not even finish our burger. I believe it was the seasoning but neither of us liked it.
The day before we left, we decided to give breakfast a shot. It was fine…nothing over the top and crazy but fine. The drinks were good and as I said above, pricey. But, most places do have expensive drinks unless you find a good happy hour.
Overall, we loved The Sands at Grace Bay. It is a good, affordable resort that will fit into most budgets. There are pros and cons to all resorts, but overall I would stay here again. Currently, they are running a special. If you stay three nights you get the fourth night free. Also, you can stay seven nights and pay for five. Both specials are good until December 2018.
