Royal West Indies in Grace Bay
My husband and I have stayed at Royal West Indies in Grace Bay more than any other resort in Turks and Caicos. Why?! Because it is nice and affordable. Royal West Indies is certainly not a full service hotel nor will you get the best service while staying there. You can find many more resorts on the island that are nicer and have better service. The thing is…you pay for what you get.
We like to visit Turks and Caicos as much as possible. Being able to visit frequently means that we must stay at budget friendly hotels. It is not realistic for us to stay at high end resorts each time we visit. I mean, we could go less in order to stay somewhere nicer each time. However, we would rather visit more regularly and stay somewhere that is just average, but nice.
When you check in to Royal West Indies, you are given some rum punch that is delicious. Everyone is usually helpful at check in and check out. However, at times the staff is not the nicest or most helpful…just saying (and just being honest). But, we deal because of the price point of the rooms.
The rooms at Royal West Indies are nice and clean. The one bedroom rooms have a small kitchen area as well as a living area with a pull out couch. The bedrooms are a decent size and the bathroom is a decent size. The decor and furnishing are not over the top, but nice. The studio rooms have a bed with a small sitting area and a decent size bathroom and a kitchenette. The kitchenette has a small refrigerator, a sink, a microwave, and a coffee pot. All rooms have a balcony. Again, for us, we typically just do a garden view room in order to save money.
Please be aware that if you book an ocean front room…make sure you are at least on the second story as the first floor ocean front rooms have bushes and shrubs in front of them that block most of your view to the ocean.
The pools and the hot tub at Royal West Indies are nice and clean. The resort has recently done some updating. The pools have been refinished and look so much nicer. I love the deep blue color they added to their pool. We were in Turks and Caicos in November and they had just finished the updates and everything looked so good. We did not stay there in November, but went to the Pelican for lunch.
The resort grounds at the Royal West Indies is managed by a sweet older lady. We always enjoy talking to her and she does a wonderful job making sure the flowers and shrubs always look good. When we were there in June she had planted some bananas. However, she lost them in the storms. She is always nice enough to have someone get us a coconut down while there so we can enjoy fresh coconut juice…which is so yummy.
Grace Bay Beach
I have said this many times…no matter where you stay in the Grace Bay area…everyone has the one thing that is the same…Grace Bay Beach. It doesn’t matter if you stay in the crabbiest hotel or the best on Grace Bay, you still have the beautiful Grace Bay Beach to enjoy. Now, I’m not saying to go stay in a crappy hotel because I wouldn’t. But, if you are like us, you are rarely in the room. So, we mix things up from time to time because we like to try different places, but our affordable go to resort is Royal West Indies.
At the beach, you will enjoy complimentary beach chairs, umbrellas, and beach towels. As far as beach activities go….you have complimentary paddle boards, kayaks, hobie cats, and snorkeling gear. I will say that at times you can see some pretty cool sea life just right off of the beach. We have seen everything from Jojo the dolphin, baracudas, sting rays, and lots of different fish.
Pelican Bay Restaurant
The one great thing about Pelican Bay, other than their food, is their drink specials. My husband loves the fact that they do a great happy hour every day from 5-7pm. Their happy hour is famous because it really is one of the best on the island.
We have never eaten supper at Pelican Bay, but we have eaten many lunches there and breakfast occasionally. Pelican Bay has a really good bar type menu. My husband and I often split their chicken quesadillas for lunch. We have also tried the pizza, burger, wings, salads, and nachos. Again, we have never eaten supper but often enjoy a quick lunch from there. When we are out on the beach, we do not like having to take up our beach time in order to leave and eat…so it is nice having a place on the property that is quick and good.
As far as breakfast goes, we have eaten a couple of times. We have gotten the American breakfast as well as pancakes. Both were good, however, I prefer something lighter like a smoothie for breakfast.
Again, at times, service at the Pelican is an issue. Depending on who is working…(because it is not everyone)…but some staff members are not the most friendly and are so slow. But, we often joke that slow service is “island time.”
Budget Friendly Hotel
Again, Royal West Indies in Grace Bay is a great budget friendly hotel. If you go there expecting top notch service you will be disappointed. If you go expecting a nice resort with nice grounds, a great beach, and a good casual dining restaurant with a great happy hour…you will be happy. Oh, and it is in a great location that is close to pretty much everything…including our favorite restaurant…Coco Bistro.
It is our go to spot and we feel so comfortable there. Since we have been going we have gotten to meet some great people that own places there. If you see the homeless looking man on the beach with lots of “stuff” sitting all around him…go speak. He is super nice and proves that you cannot judge someone by their appearance. It is also nice to talk to people and listen to how long the same people have been going to Turks and Caicos and how many stay in the same resorts over and over again because it feels like home.
Each time we visit we meet new people and make new memories. Turks and Caicos really feels like our second home. I would go every couple of weeks if I could. Christopher and I joke all the time that we go through withdrawals if we have not been in a while. We just went in November but we are oh so ready to go back already.
If you are looking for a beach vacation, I high suggest Turks and Caicos. You will not be disappointed 🙂
