Outdoor Living Space
If you follow me on Instagram, you know that we have had some trouble with our painters. We have now been in our new home for almost six months and our front/back porch ceilings as well as garage is not finished. We have tried to get two different painters to come and we have had no luck so far. I just do not understand the construction world sometimes. The guys who built our home were wonderful…no complaints! I would use them again in a heartbeat. Our painter, however, I cannot say the same. While we were building he would not show up to work more days than he came. When he was here he wasn’t really “here” if you know what I mean. Anyway…that is a whole another story.
Last week, my husband came home with all the supplies needed to finish everything. We both agreed early on that we did not mind doing some work to save money…but said we were not painting our porch ceilings because of the height. Well…as I said in my Instagram post yesterday…we are eating our words. We have started painting our ceilings. It sucks, but it is what it is. We are both very capable of doing the work, we just didn’t want to. We did so much on our house to save money and this was the one thing we did not want to do. But, it looks like if we want to enjoy our outdoor living space anytime soon…well we have to start.
With all of that being said, I have not ordered any porch furniture. Since everything has been so unfinished, I did not want to order lots of stuff and have nowhere to put it when it came in. Now that we have started, I have decided to start ordering outdoor furniture for our back porch. Our back porch is one of my favorite features of our entire home. We have large archways across the back and a 13 foot ceiling which makes it feel spacious. We have a fireplace on one end. This particular spot is going to be our living space. The other side is going to be our dining type area. Our back porch is really my dream outdoor living space.
I haven’t started buying anything, but that does not mean I have not obsessively looked for months now. Today, I am sharing with you some of my top picks for outdoor furniture. When I started looking for outdoor furniture, I quickly figured out how expensive it is. My husband has always built my outdoor dining tables. However, I want a wicker type sofa for my outdoor living space and he cannot exactly build that. I want something super cozy with super thick comfy cushions. During my search, I found more items than not that were completely over my budget. I mean, paying $5-$6000 for an outdoor sofa when the sofa inside my home didn’t cost anywhere close to that just doesn’t make sense.
So, after lots of searching, I found the Santa Barbara Outdoor Wicker Sofa from Wicker Paradise. I am pretty much 95% set on this sofa. The customer service has been wonderful. I have some wicker samples on the way to me now so I can decide exactly which color I want to go with. I am going to use the light cushions as shown in the pic. This particular outdoor sofa comes highly recommended by the guys at Wicker Paradise. The outdoor sofa comes with a great warranty as well. I have figured out three major things to look at when buying outdoor sofas:
- Weight capacity
- Frame Material
Some of the sofas I have seen for $1000 have a weight capacity of like 300lbs. I mean, with that, you would be scared to put more than a couple of people on the sofa. You do not want to have to tell people not to sit on the sofa because it might break due to the weight capacity. This particular sofa has a weight capacity of 8-900. Next thing, Warranty – make sure the sofa comes with a good warranty.
You do not want to spend $1000+ on something and it only have a year warranty. The next thing to pay attention to are cushions…the brand specifically. I suggest only using Sunbrella fabric for outdoors. I have tried different brands and nothing holds up outdoors like Sunbrella. It just doesn’t. Lastly, pay attention to the frame material. This particular sofa has an aluminum frame that is rust proof. Soo..after my research and speaking to Wicker Paradise, I decided to move forward and get some samples.
Oh, and one more thing..this sofa is huge! It is 85×38 and the cushions are 9” thick. Right now Wicker Paradise is having a great sale so you can really get good prices on your furniture.
Finding the perfect outdoor sofa for my outdoor living space was at the top of my list. The next most important thing was finding outdoor chairs to complete the set. I am not a matchy-matchy kind of person, so I have been on the hunt for some unique chairs to put with my sofa.
I found the Open Weave All Weather Wicker Chair from Terrain and also found the Kennebunkport Teak and Wicker Basket Lounge Chair Set at Birch Lane. These are my favorite so far…I am still looking. I love them, but I really want to get the sofa in and then look at my space to see which item would best fit.
We have a ceiling fan that is going to go in the center of our living space. As for the light above our dining table – I didn’t do an electrical light there…instead I want a light that uses candles instead of electricity. We have lots of lighting on our porch so I knew I didn’t need a light for light..but rather more for looks. But, in this case…I wanted a light that I could use Citronelle candles in for bugs. I think it makes perfect sense to put a light fixture over your table that can use Citronelle candles. This was, maybe the bugs will stay away while you are sitting at the table trying to eat and converse with one another. Oh and I love the vibe that candles give, especially when outdoors at night.
I love the simplicity of the Iron Candle Chandelier from Terrain. I’ve had my eye on it for a while now and I think it would look great above our outdoor dining table.
Outdoor Dining Space
I have a wood dining table that my husband built for me. I ordered the Carlisle Dining Chairs in antique brown to go with the table. They are metal and I thought they would be perfect for the space. I did the Carlisle Arm Chairs for the end of the table and the regular ones for the sides. Again, I like to mix things up. I got them in last week and I love the look.
Once I get everything as far as my big stuff on the porch…I will start adding my decorative type items. We did not do an outdoor kitchen at this house. At our last house we had a built in grill and didn’t like that it was so “permanent” This time, we are going to build something that looks for like a piece of furniture to put our mini fridge and sink it. This way, if we ever want to change it, we can just pick it up and move it. In the future, we want to put in a pool and a pool house. So, I did not think it was necessary to build an outdoor kitchen and then put a small kitchen in a pool house. That seems a bit excessive.
I am a bargain hunter. I like nice things, but I am not just going to pay a large amount of money for something without looking around and trying to get the best deal. The one good thing about buying outdoor furniture right now is that most companies are having sales! I’m pretty sure this is the only things about not having my porches already finished!!
