How I earned a Free Trip to Turks and Caicos
I leave in exactly 13 days for my favorite place – Turks and Caicos. This trip is extra special because guess what…our plane tickets and hotel are 100% paid for through our credit card points. I mean…how exciting is it to be going on a 7 night/8 day trip to Turks and Caicos and have it completely paid for?! The only thing we are responsible for when we get there is our food/drinks and activities. Earning a free trip to Turks and Caicos with rewards points is super amazing.
We have always paid for our plane tickets with points, but never our room and our plane tickets. We are staying at Royal West Indies, which is not an over the top 5 star luxury…but it is a nice, clean resort that we really love. Staying here allowed us to not have to come out of pocket for our room. We could have stayed at a more expensive resort, but by staying here…we did not have to come out of pocket for anything.
My husband and I actually considered staying higher end and having a portion of it paid for. But, at the end of the day and after just building a house…we thought it would be nice to only have to come out of pocket for our spending money. Anyone who has built a house knows how expensive it is so it was nice finally get a break from spending and get rewarded.
Best Rewards Credit Cards
I know the question everyone wants answered is how? How did you earn a free trip to Turks and Caicos with rewards points? The answer is easy – you need a good rewards travel credit card. The best rewards credit cards in my opinion are the Capital One Venture Card and the Barclaycard Arrival Plus. I talked about these cards in a post back last year. But, they are still our favorites.
Both cards have great bonus points for signing up and they offer 2x points on EVERY purchase. Getting two times points on every purchase is KEY. The first card we got was one times points on everything and it took forever to accumulate a good amount of points unless you really spend lots of money each year on the credit card. So, sign up for a card…get your bonus points…and then put all the bills you can in additional to everyday expenses on the card and watch them add up. FYI – both of these cards require you to have GREAT credit. If you do not have great credit but can still properly manage a card…then there are other options for 1.5x points vs 2x points.
Now, do not spend lots of money just to build up your points. Also, do not get a credit card if you are not disciplined enough to pay it off monthly. The goal is to get some free plane tickets and/or trips…not get into credit card debt. We always pay our card off at the end of each month. We have NEVER let it get a balance. I hear of so many people in credit card debt…do not let this happen just to earn some points.
Building a house this year is one of the main reasons were able to pay for our entire trip vs just plane tickets or just the room. We put everything we could on a credit card during our house building process and then just paid it off immediately. Doing this got us LOTS of points. As a matter of fact…we are planning a trip in the fall and it will be paid for as well.
I know not everyone is building a house, but you can still accumulate lots of points. Apply for the card when you know you have more expenses than normal coming up. This will help you hit your bonus points. For us, we like to open new cards either around Thanksgiving because the holidays are expensive for us, before vacations, or when all of our insurances are due.
If you are getting ready to build a house…get a rewards card. Then, at the end of your house building process…you can go on a free trip Turks and Caicos with your rewards points (or wherever but I suggest Turks). Believe me…you will need a trip when you finish building a new home. I’m pretty sure I got stomach ulcers during our process. I cannot even describe how much in need I am of a vacation.
We moved in back in February and we are still not settled and things are still stressful at times. I’m the type of person who just likes to have everything in order immediately and that is just not realistic or affordable. So, it is nice to get a free trip and not worry about spending lots more money to go.
Barclaycard Arrival Plus or Capital One Venture
Either of these cards will be great for you. Here is a quick comparison of both.
- 50,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 in the first 90 days
- 2x miles on all purchases
- 5% miles back to use towards next redemption
- $89 yearly fee (waived the first year)
- 40,000 bonus miles after spending $3,000 in the first 90 days
- 2x miles on all purchases
- $59 yearly fee (waived the first year)
Both cards are super easy to redeem for travel. I’ve never had a bit of trouble with either one. Also, I know some will look at the fees and so…NO…but the rewards are far better than worrying about the yearly fee. These really are the best rewards credit cards. They have so many great benefits. Why not take advantage and earn free travel from expenses that you already have.
Anyway, I hope these tips will help you earn some free travel. If you are not having any super large purchases…it may take you a little longer to get enough points for a free trip. But, it can happen and it is so worth it. Earning a free trip to Turks and Caicos with rewards points makes the trip even better I think. It is not every day that you get a free trip.
